About Fast Hotpot
Hotpot (Malatang)is a famous Chinese street food originating from Sichuan. Customers choose meats, vegetables, noodles, and tofu, which are then cooked in a boiling, spicy, numbing broth flavored with Sichuan peppercorns and chili. It is affordable, customizable, and loved for its bold, mouth-tingling taste and lively dining experience.

In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Irvine; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 12β10 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. Chinese hot pot place, open late, $15 a pound plus the cost of broth, but I think you can also do dry bowls without broth. They have a good selection of vegetables, noodles, meats, including shrimp, fish, and squid. I liked the shrimp and fish, but would not do the squid again because it was a little chewy. I had the bone broth which was too heavy on the five spice flavor for my palette. Next time, Iβll try a different broth or maybe just a dry bowl. I thought the music they played inside was pretty awful, but thankfully thereβs plenty of outdoor seating :) Iβm definitely willing to try this place again.

The food was just okay. Not bad, but definitely nothing memorable. The bigger issue is the price. Paying around $50 for a single bowl like this just doesnβt make sense, especially in OC where you can easily go to an AYCE Korean BBQ or Japanese hot pot place for the same price and get a full meal. Honestly, even if this were $20, Iβd probably think twice about coming back. (Also, while I was eating, I noticed something in the bowl that I definitely didnβt add. It was blood tofu β either lamb blood or duck blood β and it was already in there.)

Once I got my food, I was like wow! If no one had ever told me, I'd have thought it was the Year of the Pig coming up, because then why this looks so much like the pig feedπ. This is totally an artπThe art of how easy is to make money out of costumers pocket. You just put regular sesame sauce on the boiled food, and give a big name βBeijingβ then you can trick people. Love it love it love it ππ

My friend and I ate here on a Saturday afternoon. The weather was fair and there are options for indoor and outdoor dining. There are plenty of ingredients to choose from: bok choy, fish balls, imitation crab sticks, fish cakes, tofu, ramen and/or egg noodles. The ingredients look fresh and well-maintained. Once you are finished choosing your ingredients on a large bowl, the cashier will have it weighed and you'll choose your preferred broth on the menu. I opted for chicken broth and chose it to be not spicy. The total price varies per weight, but it's worth it especially if you're craving authentic hot-pot like soup. Once you finish paying, they'll lend you a buzzer and it will beep once your order is ready. We only waited for less than 10 minutes, and I was impressed with the presentation and service. I added some green onions on top, right before eating it outside. The broth has an umami flavor, while the egg noodles and vegetables I chose were not overcooked. I also love the chewiness of the fish balls and tofu. I'll be back again if I'm craving some Fast Hot Pot by UC Irvine.

It appeared there were only 2 people working while we dined. This location still has the prior Ramen tenant name on the building but it is hot pot. Walk in and grab a bowl and tongs to select your items. The doors were not super clean and left open- probably because there were parties ahead of us. They were out of several vegetables and meat so we had to ask them to restock. There is a small sauce bar next to the for-sale drinks display. You get to the counter and select your broth and pay by weight. I did not notice that the scale was tared to the weight of the plastic bowl. We ordered 3 bowls and each bowl is given a number. However they were done around the same time- took maybe 10 minutes. Everything tasted okay. On our way out we noticed that the door said 2 am for closing time but definitely looked like they were about to close when we left around 9 pm. They should consider updating their operating hours on their storefront.
